The Grand Tour of Italy
Google Arts & Culture came to us with a masterpiece of a brief. Help reinvigorate Italian culture by reinventing the Grand Tour of Italy for the modern age in partnership with Italiana Giovani per L’Unesco. And this time everyone is invited.
Celebrate the past. Define the Future.

Four iconic cities. One epic journey.
Soak up the past by stepping into modern-day Venice, Siena, Rome and Palermo. See through the eyes of ancient visionaries. Step inside the Palio in Siena or re-visit the haunting tales of the plague that rocked Venice in 1575.
STOP ONE
The plague of 1575 in Venice
Ask any Venetian. The best party in Venice isn’t Carnival; it’s the 440-year-old Festa del Redentore. Every year a remarkable 25,000 fireworks explode over Serenissima, as locals take to boats and reclaim their canals. But this festival has a dark and dreadful past, one which led to a surprising Italian innovation.
STOP TWO
The Palio of Siena
The Palio of Siena is a 500-year-old horse race famous for tales of danger and unbridled passion. But it’s also the reason why Siena is one of the most harmonious places to live in all of Europe. All thanks to 17 rival “families”—or contrade—whose traditions have both fiercely divided, and deeply united the citizens for centuries.

Google Cardboard 360º
For each of the main stops we also created rich 360 VR experiences to help transport you into the moment. These experiences were provided to schools for kids to use as part of Google’s educational programming assistance.
